The Pampered Hen

Today hubby said I could write a book, "The Pampered Hen."  I said there probably is already a blog by that name.  He was out on a 50 mile bike ride today and did not see any animals enjoying as much square footage of cleared foraging space as mine.  There is still a foot of ice-crusted snow cover, thanks to the end of January blizzard and cold temps since.  But luckily, a few weeks ago I started shoveling a perimeter path around my back garden.  Then hubby helped clear some interior strips while the snow was still fluffy. Those were areas that never got planted and need some serious dig/weeding.  I think this has all made for a more rapid thaw, and certainly the hens are having fun with some green sprouts and an occasional bug (?).  Even the wild turkeys are jealous.  We had about 10 cross through the pines in the back yard and hop the neighbor's fence.  Then the males were starting their fan dance.  Seems they are going with the flow, and prancing around on the snow cover. Anyway, still more garden strips to thaw.  I did see some mustard greens that over-wintered under a frost cover.  We'll see if it amounts to anything or if Mr. Woodchuck will get to it before I get my fence installed.

hello

Random thoughts on gardening, chickens, and figuring out what to do with all the produce.
